The 78-year-old chairman of Laura Ashley has been ordered to pay his 70-year-old ex-wife £64 million in one of the biggest divorce settlements in the UK courts.
Khoo Kay Peng will have to pay the sum to Pauline Chai, a former beauty queen who initially sought about £100 million after the breakdown of their 42-year marriage.
Ms Chai said that she had been a traditional wife and mother and so deserved half of what she claimed were assets of £205 million.
Dr Khoo, non-executive chairman of Laura Ashley Holdings, said that she should receive about £9 million, arguing that he had made a special contribution to generating their wealth. His true assets, he said, were worth £66 million.
