Harriet Higgins is three months pregnant and says she got violently sick, claiming this was caused by some residents smoking heroin and crack cocaine in the drug-riddled accommodation
A homeless pregnant woman has described her 'hostel hell', alleging she was threatened and neglected while surrounded by drug addicts in a filthy shared room.
Harriet Higgins works as a volunteer to help the homeless despite being forced onto the streets herself.
The 26-year-old is three months pregnant and says she got violently sick, claiming this was caused by some residents smoking heroin and crack cocaine in the drug-riddled accommodation.
The terrified single mum-to-be feels staff haven't listened to her pleas for help, and says she is scared, depressed and unable to sleep.
She said: "I went to see the house and I was only supposed to be there 4-6 weeks.
"But I was there for three-and-a-half months sharing a room with three other people and they said that they weren’t moving me because they were waiting for somewhere suitable to become available.
"Just even to close the door behind me and not have to worry. And they still wouldn’t do that.
"There was about seven people that moved into that room after me and they all got moved into six-month beds and I was still there waiting.
"They were smoking crack and heroin in the room and in the bathroom. The smell was so bad I was violently getting sick.
"One day I come back and there’s blood all over the floor in the bathroom.
"I went up and I complained about that and they were like 'Oh sorry about that' but they didn’t change anything or change my situation.
She added: "The drugs are a terrible problem. My Da passed away from an overdose of heroin seven years ago.
"I always said that I wouldn’t turn out like my dad."
The brave young mum-to-be intends to keep on fighting until she is moved into suitable accommodation.
She added: "I’m just going to keep fighting. I’m in this situation now, I’ve been looking for properties but they’re so hard to come by.
"It’s so hard to find a landlord who takes the HAP.
"And when you go to a property there’s about 15 other people in front of you viewing it so your chances are very low.
"So I’m going to keep fighting, I have a TD helping me but I feel like I’m hitting a brick wall.
"They told me that this was not suitable for my situation. It’s not one bit suitable."
