A hug, a kiss and a Tiffany box: the awkward moment the Obamas met the Trumps

The awkward moment the Obamas met the Trumps before the inauguration has been captured by many cameras.

Michelle Obama grimaced as Melania Trump handed her a blue Tiffany box.
The contents of the gift are as yet unknown.

To make matters worse, Donald Trump interrupted the gift-giving, bouldering through the two women to go and shake hands with Barack Obama.

The gift-giving and greeting was interrupted as he forced himself through them.

Prior to this, they all shared awkward kisses on the cheeks and wooden hugs.

Although Barack Obama smiled widely throughout and seemed to try to diffuse the strange situation, the awkwardness of their meeting was noticed by many online.

Barack Obama left the White House for the last time as President today, before Donald Trump is due to be sworn in.

He tweeted some inspiring final words for people across the world, echoing the messages which got him elected in 2008.

Minutes before he left the White House for the final time as president, Mr Obama left some parting words on his Twitter account.
He wrote: "It's been the honor of my life to serve you. You made me a better leader and a better man.
"I won't stop; I'll be right there with you as a citizen, inspired by your voices of truth and justice, good humor, and love."

What will Barack Obama do with his retirement?
As one of the youngest former presidents in US history, Barack Obama has always expected to enjoy an active retirement. Here are the most likely ways he will remain in the public eye:
    Write his presidential memoirs
He’s already a highly successful author. Publishers are keenly anticipating his next round of memoirs, with advances estimated in the region of $25m to $45m.
    Public speaking
Most ex-presidents supplement their retirement income on the lucrative public speaking circuit. For example, Bill Clinton commands in the region of $225,000 per engagement.
    Mentoring
In 2014, Mr Obama founded My Brother’s Keeper – an initiative which creates a mentoring system for young black men. He is expected to increase his involvement with the organisation when he leaves the White House.
    Grassroots campaigning on key issues
He is also likely to step up his work with Organizing for Action, a grassroots effort formed from the president’s 2012 re-election team, which focuses on such matters as climate change and immigration reform.
However, he is less inclined to fight on specific matters of policy with President Trump, saying “I want to be respectful of the office and give the President-elect an opportunity to put forward his platform and his arguments without somebody popping off in every instance,"
    Teaching the law
“I love the law, intellectually,” Mr Obama has said. “I love nutting out these problems, wrestling with these arguments. I love teaching. I miss the classroom and engaging with students."
Obvious choices are Columbia, where he was an undergraduate political science major, Harvard where he graduated from law school, or the University of Chicago where he taught previously.
