South Africa: Police on standby in Vuwani

More police have been deployed to Vuwani outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo. This comes after community structures representing concerned residents declared the start of a shutdown of services.

They want the Municipal Demarcation Board to exclude some parts of Vuwani in the new LIM345 municipality.

The police reacted swiftly last night after groups of protesters attempted to blockade the Malamulele-Ellim road with rocks and burning tyres. Police spokesperson Moatse Ngoepe says no destruction of property has been reported.

Ngoepe says the police will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that there is no repeat of burning of schools and other properties. The demarcation dispute, which started in 2016, has seen about thirty schools torched, allegedly by protestors.
