The two survivors of the Rhodes park attack, in a bid to find closure have forgiven the men who raped them and killed their partners. They returned to the crime scene on Sunday seeking closure.
The three perpetrators were each handed four life sentences by the high court in Johannesburg on Friday. Thabo Nkala, Admore Ndlovu and Mduduzi Mathibela began their life behind bars. Mathibela however still maintains his innocence.
Survivor of the attack Siphokazi Tyeke says as a Christian believer she has forgiven them, but the painful memories are not easy to erase.
As they recalled the events of the fateful day in October 2015, another attack survivor, Jabu Mbatha, says she is happy that they got this sentence -but that she still can't forget about what happened.
The two couples were approached by a group of men at Rhodes park; they were forced to lie down on the ground and were robbed. While the men were tied up and forced into the dam, their wives were being raped by some of the attackers.
In a quest for closure, they held a prayer at the place where their ordeal took place. But old wounds are likely to be reopened as several more suspects are still on the run.
