Stats freak: Antetokounmpo's numbers put him among NBA's elite

It’s becoming a two-way most valuable player race in the NBA this season, a classic showdown between Houston’s James Harden and Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook.

Both players have dazzled fans with their stunning play, and Westbrook has averaged a triple-double while breaking Oscar Robertson’s record for triple-doubles in a single season. LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard also are in the conversation because of their stellar all-around performances.

But the Milwaukee Bucks have their own stats freak, the Greek Freak himself, 22-year-old Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The regular season ends Wednesday when the Bucks meet the Boston Celtics, and Antetokounmpo has a chance to rank in the league’s top 20 in five categories: total points (14th going into Tuesday's games), rebounds (14th), assists (tied for 18th), steals (ninth) and blocks (fifth).

No NBA player has ever done that for an entire season, and only two have ranked in the top 25 in all those categories: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and recently retired Kevin Garnett, who has mentored both Antetokounmpo and Bucks rookie Thon Maker.

“A guy who leads the team in every category, who can finish in the top 20 in every category, it’s just unheard of,” Bucks coach Jason Kidd said.

“This is a historical season for stats for a lot of players, as we know. Hopefully, he is on one of those (three all-league teams) because he deserves to be on there.

“He would be in for the MVP, but unfortunately (for him) there’s a lot of history being written right now. He’s not (in the running), but if it were a normal year, yes.”
